Hur sköter man teakmöbler? Stockamöllan Möbelsnickeri AB

How do you care for teak furniture?

Short answer: keep teak furniture clean, let it dry thoroughly, and regularly check for dirt, growth, fittings, and standing moisture. Teak does not need to be oiled. Untreated teak naturally develops a silver-grey patina when exposed to weather and UV light.

This is Stockamöllan's main guide to basic care. For the choice between oiled and untreated teak, read Oil teak or not?. For preparation before a surface treatment, read Treat teak furniture.

Basic care for teak furniture

  1. Remove loose debris, pollen, and dirt.
  2. Check for stains or growth on the surface that require special assessment.
  3. Clean according to the advice for the specific furniture and the product you are using.
  4. Allow the wood to dry thoroughly.
  5. Check screws, fittings, and other functional parts.
  6. Then determine if any surface treatment is really needed.

Patina is not the same as dirt

Untreated teak changes from a warmer tone to silver-grey when exposed to weather and UV light. This is a natural color change. Dirt, discolorations, growth, or damage, however, should be assessed separately and not automatically described as patina.

Cleaning – start gently

Always follow the product's care instructions. Test the cleaning product and method on a small, less visible area. Avoid treating a damp or dirty surface and do not mix products unless the manufacturer explicitly states that they can be combined.

Stockamöllan's full official protocol for exact cleaning agents and intervals is not established in this guide. Therefore, contact Stockamöllan when a specific stain, previous treatment, or product requires precise advice.

Does teak furniture need to be oiled?

No. Oiling is primarily a choice for those who want to influence color and appearance. Oiled teak requires recurring checks to ensure the surface looks even. Read the separate decision guide on teak oil before making your choice.

Care throughout the year

Before the season

Check the furniture's surface, function, and fittings before it is put into regular use. Clean if necessary and let it dry.

During the summer

Remove spills and dirt before they remain for too long. Avoid unnecessary standing moisture and store cushions dry when not in use.

Before winter

Clean and let the furniture dry. Follow the advice for the current model and only use covers that are suitable for the product and can be used according to its instructions.

Also see the seasonal guide Get your teak furniture ready for summer.

Cushions and accessories

Cushions should be stored dry and washed according to the label or product information for the specific model. Do not assume that the same washing instructions apply to all textiles. Also, check that rain covers and other accessories are compatible with the furniture.

When should you contact Stockamöllan?

Ask for advice if you don't know which treatment is already on the surface, if the furniture has an unusual stain or damage, or if you need instructions for a specific model. Contact Stockamöllan and feel free to include the product name and attach a clear image.
